From medicated creams for muscle pain to cannabis oil cartridges, cannabis concentrates are found in hundreds of different products.

Concentrates are specific products made using cannabis plants, yet they only possess the plant’s desired components, like terpenes and cannabinoids. They are made by the processing of the cannabis plant, which removes all excess materials and impurities. Thus, cannabis concentrates are known for having much higher percentages of cannabinoids and terpenes than actual cannabis flower because of this process.

Wondering what’s unique about these concentrates when they are still made from cannabis flower after all?

A concentrated form of cannabis may have a stronger potency level than the original cannabis flower it comes from, depending on the product and method by which it is processed.  For instance, next time you roll your pre-roll you can try the popular method of adding a drop of cannabis oil to the outside of the pre-roll and you may feel the enhanced difference!

You can also try methods of consuming cannabis like vaping or dabbing, these concentrated forms of cannabis known as concentrates usually offer a more potent experience.  However, to consume the best from the wide variety of cannabis concentrates available, you must have a little knowledge about them. To help you get up to speed on the basics of cannabis concentrates and consume what’s best for your needs, we have compiled a guide in this blog!

We’ve put together this excellent guide detailing every aspect of cannabis concentrates.

What Are the Common Types of Cannabis Concentrates?

Though there is a wide variety of cannabis concentrates available, an individual new to cannabis can pick up the following commonly used types of cannabis concentrates at most licensed and trusted dispensaries in an area near you!

Tinctures – A tincture comes in a liquid form and can be ingested orally. The best way to use tinctures is to administer the desired amount of drops under the tongue and let the concentrate absorb into the bloodstream. It typically takes around 20 – 30 minutes to see an effect, but is a convenient and precise way to consume cannabis and measure dosage.

Vaporizer Cartridges – Vape cartridges are cannabis oil-filled cartridges that may come with a battery attached just like an e-cigarette if it is a disposable vape or may come as just a cartridge to replace an empty one for your rechargeable battery.  The best way to use vaporizer cartridges is to inhale and wait for a few minutes until it finally settles inside your mouth and you can feel an effect. This is a precise and easy way to consume cannabis and measure your dosage, but always remember to start low and go slow!

Badder and Budder – Budder typically has a smooth, creamy butter consistency, while badder is usually a slightly different consistency. Budder concentrates can be made using trim, cured nugs, or a freshly harvested plant. Both concentrates undergo nearly identical extraction processes that often result in a soft texture with a wet terpene-gloss.

Live Resin This concentrate is made by flash-freezing an entire, living marijuana plant, and then by using a chilled solvent in the extraction process. Once dried it may come in several different consistencies depending on the process and type of product being made. Sometimes it may look similar to little crystals mixed with honey, sugar is one form of live resin, while badder is another type of live resin but with a smoother more peanut butter-like consistency. Live resins come in vape cartridge form or in easy to dab forms.

Wax –  Wax looks and feels like wax but can also have different consistencies, like crumble. It’s extracted in a similar way to shatter. Different temperatures in the purge stage produce different consistencies, and wax is just shatter that was produced at a temperature leading to a fluffier, wax-like product. Wax products are used when dabbing.

Capsules – Capsules come in the form of an oil that’s been refined using a solvent such as CO2 or butane. They have a high percentage of THC and so can pose a much quicker and lasting impact. The best way to use them is oral ingestion.

Concentrates Vs. Extracts – Is There A Difference Between the Two?

Although the terms concentrates and extracts are often used interchangeably, the two aren’t always the same. Although all extracts are concentrates, not all concentrates can be called extracts.

The primary reason that makes them different is how the trichomes have been collected in the first place. While extracts are a type of concentrates produced using solvents such as hydrocarbon and butane (as well as other solvents) used to wash off trichomes from cannabis plants, concentrates are produced by mechanically or physically removing the trichomes to isolate precious resin heads.

Some common examples of cannabis extracts could be Rick Simpson Oil (RSO), Butane Hash Oil (BHO), and the CO2-extracted cannabis wax, which could be in the forms of badder, shatter, budder, crumble, and so on. Whereas kief, dry sift, and rosin are some popular examples of concentrates made without solvents.

How to Find the Perfect Cannabis Concentrate That Suits Yourself?

Concentrates are popular for providing a refined and smoke-free cannabis experience. They come in different types and consistencies, and the increasing legalization of cannabis across the United States is only contributing to their rise in popularity.

With popularity comes an abundance of innovative and new products that may make choosing one cannabis concentrate that suits your desires somewhat overwhelming. While some may help you feel relaxed and send you into a creative mindset there is a cannabis concentrate for every mood!

Here’s a small guide to what concentrates you shall choose when in search of a particular impact.

  1. Seeking potency and euphoria? Pick an oil that’s high in THC.
  2. Seeking a therapeutic relief without the euphoric feeling? Pick a product that’s high in CBD and low in THC.
  3. Seeking balanced and gentle relief? Pick an extract that’s an equal percentage of both the CBD and THC

When using a product with a high level of THC, make sure to try a modest dose until you reach your goal, start low and go slow! You can always try more, but this is a crucial step for determining your ideal dose and the effects of the product for you as everyone can react slightly differently. Even THC microdoses may be enough to make you experience a peaceful feeling, relief,  or help you be more focused at times so make sure you start by finding your ideal dose.

However, experiencing psychoactive feelings with CBD products isn’t likely to be an issue. It’s always essential to maintain a dosage and not over-exceed your limitations. You might need a higher dose in some cases, but lower doses could efficiently work for recreational purposes depending on your body’s tolerance.
